The second part of the Parisian Ghetto has some shops, buildings and Cafe Metro. It gives access to the third part of the level.

Known references[]

06.01 - Waste Bin[]

The image from Prince comes from a magazine called "Creem" from September 1984. It comes from this website: https://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/13316398/prince-slade-run-dmc-shannon.

06.02 - Conform shop[]

The Conform shop from the Parisian Ghetto has been based on the Conforama shop in Paris at the Rue des Bourdonnais. The shop is a home furnishings retail chain with over 200 stores in France, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Luxembourg, Italy and Croatia. They deal in electronics, home and furniture, home improvements, photo finishing, craft supplies, party supplies. [1]

In the game the shop is closed, but if you fly through it, inside the shop there are three levels. There was not enough time develop the shop but you can see places where shop items can be displayed.

06.03 - Lasconi shop[]

Next to the Conform shop is a Lasconi shop. It is an anagram of Nicolas. This was done for maybe obvious reasons of copyright claim. There is one at "Rue Rivoli" in the 9th Arrodisement, near the Rue des Bourdonnais.

It is a shop in France (Paris), United Kingdom (London), Belgium, Germany and Poland. Nicolas stocks more than 1,200 wines, champagnes and other alcoholic beverages.[2]

06.04 - Boucherie shop[]

On the side of the Lasconi shop is another mini shop: a boucherie[3]. It has a banner, on it reads: Boucherie: Les Fermiers du Berry On the 11th Arrondisement in Paris, at the Rue Godefroy Cavaignac, the shop has the same logo and text.

06.05 - Cabrettes et Cabrettaires[]

It is a window next to the shop of Lasconi. Window with text says: “Cabrettes et Cabrettaires. Siege Social Bouree de Paris”.

Cabrettes[4] is a type of bagpipe. Siege Social Bouree means: head of office of Bouree de Paris[5]. According to the site it is located in Rue de Bagnolet, in the 20th arrodissement and in existence since 1925.

06.06 - Charcuterie[]

The sign "Charcuterie" looks very like the Boucherie/Charcuterie in Rue Godefroy Cavaignac in Paris. The Charcuterie shop is a typical French thing, read more here.

06.07 - Iron wrought above the Charcuterie[]

The iron wrought balcony above the Charcuterie is a mix of two iron wrought balconies in Paris. I found these in Rue de La Bourdonnais. Thanks to this image.[6]

The images came from google maps.

06.08 - Gardin D'hiver, demo poster[]

Same as some things in AOD the poster has text that cannot be read very easily. It's a bit blur. There is a second version of the poster that can be found when Lara is flying from the Café Metro. It reveals the text: "Jardin D'Hiver", "Alt Demo" and something with "421-422"

When looking up. I came to Henri Salvador - Jardin D'Hiver. A song on his album, Chambre avec Vue (2001). It can be watched here. Chambre avec Vue was his last album before he died.

Jardin D'Hiver means Wintergarden. It has as connection with the Biodome level which is a greenhouse. There is also an Art Nouveau greenhouse in Laeken, Belgium that is called the Jardin D'Hiver.

06.09 - Man hole[]

The man hole in the second part of the Parisian Ghetto is based on a real manhole. Found the image at Wikimedia commons. It says it is from St. Denis and the words on it is “Carpin - St. Denis”.

06.10 - Tabac sign[]

The “tabac” sign in the red squire can be seen at every café in Paris. I couldn’t find the “café" sign. For example, you find this in Rue Saint-Dominque, Paris (see second picture).

06.11 - Can of poke[]

This can is a reference to Coca Cola / Pepsi Cola. But for obvious reasons it is renamed.

I don't know if it said: "poke" or "puke".

06.12 - French mailbox[]

A mailbox in Paris. The texts reads: “Ne pas déposer de journaux. Dans cette boite” (Do not drop newspapers. In this box). I found one in the 16th arrondissement in Paris. [7]

06.13 - Rue des Bourdonais[]

Rue des Bourdonais lies in the 1st Arrondissement of Paris.

The arrondissement is situated principally on the right bank of the River Seine. It also includes the west end of the Île de la Cité. The arrondissement is one of the oldest in Paris, the Île de la Cité having been the heart of the city of Lutetia, conquered by the Romans in 52 BC, while some parts on the right bank (including Les Halles) date back to the early Middle Ages. (from Wikipedia)

Most of my findings lies in the Rue des Bourdonais or the 1st Arrondissement of Paris. More information about the street: here.

06.14 - Place d'Arcade[]

In Paris there is no such street like "Place D'Arcade”, but there is a Rue L'arcade and the Hotel D'arcade, it leads to Place d'Rome. It is placed in the 8th Arrondissement of Paris. The name "Arcade" could also be a reference to the arcade hall or arcade games like pong. It could translate as "Game place".

06.15 - Rue Dominique[]

This street exist as the Rue st. Dominque. It lies in the 7th Arrondissement of Paris. It is a large street and the buildings look a bit like the Rue Dominique.

It was renamed Rue Saint-Dominique in 1643 after the Dominican monastery set up a few years earlier near the eastern end of the street (now absorbed by the Boulevard Saint-Germain), whose only remnant is the Église Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin on the Place Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin (called Place des Jacobins until 1802, after the Dominicans). (From wikipedia)

06.16 - Three posters[]

Three posters not used in the game. I found these in GMX files.

  • Pied-Selle poster. It's about Saddle foot factories in Fumay in the French Ardennes. Poster found here.
  • Bailes-Rusos Teatro Liceo. It's a poster about the Russian Ballett in Paris (1909-1929) organised by Sergei Diagilev. Found here.
  • Barnum & Bailey's Circus Poster. Read more about it here. Found here.

Unknown references[]

06.17 - Bombolo & Marche[]

On the window is written: Bombolo this may be reference to Franco Lechner but I don't know why it is in. But there are lots of Italian things in Tomb Raider: the Angel of Darkness.

06.18 - Joy's night club[]

Apparently there was a night club in the Parisian Ghetto. But the same texture has been used in the Parisian Backstreet.

06.19 - Informatique / Tres femme[]

The informatique / Tres femme can be found in the Parisian Back Streets. The Très Femme local (translates: Very Wonmanly) is just a showgirls local or merely a sexshop.

06.20 - Vendu immobiles[]

It translates according through google as: Sold fixed assets.

06.21 - Iron wrought[]

There is another one Iron wrought balcony in this level.

06.22 - Vive la Difference[]

There is one poster, Vive la Difference, with a crown, bière. I could not find the original.

06.23 - Iron wrought door and Marche[]

Probably from a shop in paris. The "Sandwiches", "Greg?", "Restauration", "Rapide", "Bar" on the green background is not in the game.

Trivia[]

06.24 - Leftovers[]

Some of the leftovers in the game. I think these are leftovers of the building where the mailbox can be found.

06.25 - Three hidden cops[]

These cops were active in the beta version but are deleted in the retail
